Engineers from the Asian Institute of Technology and CMU have found cracks on the pagoda and some section of the surrounding terrace which put the structure at risk. In 1995, heavy rain and an earthquake caused the top part of the golden pagoda to snap. Therefore, the Fine Arts Department had asked the government for money to reinforce the soil supporting the structure to protect the ancient pagoda because it is an important place of worship and landmark of Chiang Mai as well.

Today is public holiday for Asalha Puja Day. The day that Buddha taught his sermon to followers after attaining enlightenment. And tomorrow is a Buddhist Lent Day, a period of three lunar months during the rainy season when monks are required to remain in a temple. The tradition of Buddhist Lent spends three-month rains retreat known in Thai as “Phansa”. It is marked as the beginning of the three-month Buddhist ‘lent’ period. Since this is a major festival, many people will go to temple to make a merit and some people intend their mind to stop drinking for 3 months so far.

- Air Mandalay Route CNX-Yangon
Air Mandalay will resume flights between Yangon and Chiang Mai, starting on August 2, 2009. Tourists can use this service to Myanmar, which is also called the Golden Land. The flights will be operated every Monday and Friday. The best time to travel is in the cold season of October to February. March to May is very hot same in Thailand.
